ImPACT™ Testing

ImPACT™ Testing for Concussion Management

Advocare Vernon Pediatric & Family Care offers the ImPACT™ (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) baseline test: a sophisticated, research–based, 20-minute test battery that measures multiple cognitive areas – such as memory, visual spatial abilities, and information processing – that are significantly affected by mild traumatic brain injury. ImPACT™ was developed to help clinicians evaluate an individual's recovery following a concussion. The test is a diagnostic tool for sports-related injuries and general head injuries, and particularly useful for student athletes.

Untreated or improperly managed concussions can result in severe and debilitating consequences, particularly if an individual returns to at-risk activities before recovery is complete. No one should resume athletic or at-risk activities when symptoms of concussion are present.

ImPACT™ starts with a baseline test recommended for student athletes in pre-season, or for children at age 11. In children up to age 18, guidelines recommend a baseline test every other year. When concussion is suspected, doctors compare the results of post-concussion tests to the baseline test to determine when an individual can return to at-risk activities. For your convenience, we offer the ImPACT™ baseline test in our office. Post-concussion testing is offered by our Advocare specialty practice partner, Advocare Pediatric Neurology Associates.

Insurance providers typically do not reimburse the $20.00 fee for the baseline test, but when concussion is suspected, most insurers cover ImPACT™ tests associated with concussion management.

The ImPACT™ concussion management program is used at about 1,000 high schools, 300 colleges, 250 sports medicine centers, and professional sports teams nationwide and around the world.
